Introducing new eye drops: An overview

Researchers have recently discovered the eye drops capable of reshaping and stabilizing the cornea.
It’s a big hope to all, who are suffering from corneal diseases like keratoconus disease.
It’s going to be a boon not only for keratoconus treatment but also for nearsightedness correction.
These eye drops having a combination of steroid and growth factor in traces were found to be very effective in thickening and stiffening of the corneal tissues.
First of all, the cornea is reshaped into the desired shape with the help of a special type of contact lens as used in Orthokeratology. These contact lenses are capable of changing the shape of the cornea when worn for a certain prescribed duration of time.
So the eye drops can be used along with such contact lenses to thicken and stiffen the cornea when it is in the desired shape. Thus it is possible to reshape the cornea.
Because of the property of thickening and stiffening of the corneal tissues, these eye drops may prove to be very useful in halting the progression of corneal diseases like keratoconus.
There are two types of collagen known as type-1 collagen and type-2 collagen.
The type-2 collagen is expressed in the embryonic cornea during development. But in the fully developed cornea this type 2 collagen  is slowly replaced by the type 1 collagen.
It has been found that with the help of these eye drops it is possible to induce expression of type 2 collagen which in turn returns the cornea to the development stage of the embryonic cornea.

The researchers first of all performed experiments on human corneal tissues placed in a dish.They observed that the corneal tissue thickened and stiffened without any change in the optical properties of the cornea. Then in the next stage rodent models were used to show the results previously obtained. 

Thus it is clear that, with the help of these amazing eye drops we can thicken and stiffen the cornea after reshaping it into the desired shape. Hence it is possible to restore the corneal shape and to halt the progression of keratoconus. After successful trials at every stage it would be used for human clinical trials.

How it is a boon for keratoconus and nearsightedness: The future scope of the eye drops

The success of these trials would be promising for those who are the future candidates for corneal transplant. It would reduce the number of corneal transplants to great extent by reshaping and stabilizing the cornea.

As mentioned earlier, the eye drops would be a boon for the myopia too. The nearsightedness correction can be done by using these eye drops instead of laser surgery for short sightedness.

As in this nearsighted surgery the corneal tissues are removed. The removal of eye tissues to obtain good vision is an invasive and irreversible technique of vision correction. So these eye drops would be a easier, safer and convenient alternative to the laser eye surgery.

Since the cornea of the patients suffering from keratoconus is already very thin, so for them it’s not suitable to further let their corneal tissues be removed using laser.
So for them the eye drops breakthrough is a gift of medical science.

Finally it’s not impossible that the eye glasses and contact lenses for nearsighted patients would become the thing of past after launching of the eye drops in the market.
