Eyes are one of the most vital and beautiful organs of our body. It seems impossible even to imagine enjoying life without eyes. So it’s very important to take care of these beautiful eyes.

1-Do you have bulging eyes?

If having bulging eyes with swollen eye tissues, then you could be the victim of thyroid. The tissues and muscles within the eye socket swell, because of the thyroid eye disease. There is a strong relation between abnormality of thyroid gland and thyroid eye disease.

Thyroid eye disease even if not treated, can heal itself. In most of the cases, the swelling reduces gradually without any treatment. But the bulging of eyes may still be there as some stretched tissues may not return to their normal form.


It is recommended to take the advice of eye doctor (ophthalmologist) for the treatment of thyroid eye disease but you may need the help of endocrinologist if abnormal functioning of thyroid gland is responsible for this condition. In mild cases medicines can be helpful but surgery may be required in severe cases.

2-Having blind spot and seeing flickering lights

What does this eye symptom mean?
If you are seeing flickering lights along with blind spot, then it may be the indication of ocular migraine. Ocular migraine is also known as ophthalmic migraine, eye migraine or retinal migraine.
Ocular migraine eye disease is painless. It is a visual disturbance which lasts for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

How it can be Prevented and treated?
If ocular migraine occurs while doing some task requiring good eyesight as in the case of driving, you should wait until your eyesight restores to normal. You should visit the optometrist or ophthalmologist for complete eye check-up. In some cases, the migraine headache may be related to stress. If so, then steps should be taken to reduce the stress.
             

3-Smoky and unclear vision

Cloudy and unclear eyesight is caused by clouding of natural lens of the eye. These eye symptoms could be the signals of many health issues, associated with cataracts, diabetes, tumour or side effects of medicines.
There is a close link between the cloudy vision and the cataract.  

Cataract is the major cause of blindness in humans and diagnosed generally after the age of forty. Cataract can be categorised in 3 types-
(1) Subcapsular cataract
(2) Nuclear cataract
(3) Cortical cataract

Some studies suggest that cataract can be prevented to some extent by including certain nutrients in our food like kale, almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach and other leafy vegetables.
When the cataract increases up to a certain level, the only option to regain clear eyesight is the cataract eye surgery. This corrective eye surgery becomes inevitable at this stage. In the cataract eye surgery, the clouded natural eye lens is generally replaced with a clear plastic intraocular lens (IOL) by the eye surgeon.

4-One pupil is large sized

If one of the pupil is large sized then it is called as the anisocoria. Generally unequal sizes of pupils do not cause any problem but sometimes it may be difficult to focus on the near objects. Some other symptoms associated with the anisocoria are double vision, reduced vision and headache etc. The main causes of unequal pupil sizes are eye disorders and nervous system disorders.

How it can be Prevented and treated?
As mentioned earlier, that unequal sizes of pupils (anisocoria) do not cause any problem, so it’s not required to treat it, just for the sake of anisocoria itself. But it is mandatory to visit the eye doctor to have treatment for the other problems related to anisocoria.

5-Eyes turned yellow

What does this eye symptom mean?
Sclera (visible white part of eye) turning yellow can be the indication of jaundice. Not only white of the eyes but skin too becomes pale. Jaundice is caused when there is a increase in the bilirubin level in the blood. Liver, pancreas or gallbladder problems are responsible for the jaundice generally. If you observe the whole sclera of both the eyes to be yellow, then it is the clue of jaundice. But if only a part of the sclera is yellow, some eye disease could be the underlying cause.

There are various treatment options available for the jaundice. The best one is selected based on the underlying cause. As there are many types of jaundice like newborn jaundice, pre-hepatic jaundice, intra-hepatic jaundice, post-hepatic jaundice. So a unique methodology is adopted to treat it based on the type.  

6-Sclera with red spots

Sclera is the visible white part of the eye. This eye disease is the symptom of high blood pressure or some kind of disorders related to clotting. These red spots on the sclera could also be the symptoms of subconjunctival haemorrhage. Subconjunctival haemorrhage is the bleeding under the conjunctiva (the outermost protective coating of the eyeball).

How it can be Prevented and treated?
Generally subconjunctival haemorrhage can be easily treated by using artificial tears to sooth the eye problem. But if it is caused because of trauma, then you must ensure the safety of other parts of the eye by visiting the eye doctor.

7-Are your eyes dry?

What does this eye symptom mean?
Dry eyes may be caused by continually staring at the screens of mobile phones or computers without blinking eyes for long periods. Dry eyes are also warning of sjogren’s syndrome. Sjogren’s syndrome causes the damage of tear glands and salivary glands by the immune cells. The major symptoms of sjogren’s syndrome are-
Dry mouth (xerostomia) and dry eyes (xerophthalmia), inflammation in salivary glands, joints pain etc.

Actually sjogren’s syndrome cannot be treated, only the symptoms can be controlled. Treatments for dry eyes include artificial tears to lubricate, tear duct treatment and special glasses to relieve from dryness. To cure dry mouth condition, some of the major treatments adopted are artificial saliva and enhancing the production of saliva by stimulating salivary glands. Some of the common recommendations to sooth the dryness of mouth are, to maintain hygiene of the mouth, teeth, gums and keep the lips moist etc.

8-Stye that won’t go away

An eyelid lump caused by the infection in a gland present at the base of the eyelash is called the stye.  Unhygienic conditions of the eye are responsible for the stye.
How it can be prevented and treated?
To prevent occurring of the stye, the hygiene of the eye (especially eyelids) is necessary. The treatment for the mild infection is just to wash and clean the eyelids using cotton soaked in hot water.This helps in removing any kind of dirt and oil from the eye. But it may be required to take antibiotics too to cure the severe infections. In that case it’s recommended to take the advice of an eye doctor.


9-Color dilemma

What does this eye symptom mean?
If someone is having trouble in distinguishing between red and green colours, then these are the sure eye symptoms of colour blindness. This eye problem is called as deuteranopia. This is the most common type of colour blindness.
How it can be Prevented and treated?
Colour blindness may be either inherited or acquired. The inherited colour blindness cannot be treated but the acquired colour blindness has cure. It is possible to cure the acquired colour blindness by treating the underlying injury or disease.

10-No control over eyes and tears

If someone loses control over the eye and tears then it may be the symptom of bell’s palsy. Bell’s palsy is the paralysis of a particular facial nerve. The function of this nerve is to control eyelids and facial expressions. Since the person cannot blink the eyes, so it leads to severe dry eyes. The severe dryness causes various other eye problems and eye disorders. Although the cause of bell’s palsy is unknown but it is believed to be caused by particular viruses like herpes simplex and herpes zoster (shingles). Diabetes, lyme disease and pregnancy are the risk factors of the bell’s palsy.

As the inability to blink eyes leads to severe dry eyes, so it is treated by using lubricating eye drops and ointments. Eyelid patches could be used to keep the eye closed to preserve the moisture of eye. In some cases surgery may be advised by the eye surgeon. In most of the cases bell’s palsy sufferers recover within 6 months of period.

11-Eyelids having yellow patches

What does this eye symptom mean?
Eyelid with yellow spots is considered the warning of high cholesterol levels. These yellow spots are because of the deposition of cholesterol.  

This disease is known by the name xanthelasma. These yellow patches are observed in men and women in their 40’s and 50’s generally.
How it can be Prevented and treated?
Such eye symptoms should not be neglected and you should get the plasma lipid levels checked on time. You may either be given some medicines to lower the lipid levels or some changes in the lifestyle could be recommended by the doctor.


12-Seeing dual images of things (Diplopia)

What does this eye symptom mean?
Double vision problem is due to multiple sclerosis or sudden stroke. This problem is known as diplopia. There may be various factors responsible for the double vision problem.
Diplopia causes can be categorized based on the following factors-
Lens problems- These may be keratoconus, dryness of cornea, corneal scars and infection of the cornea (herpes zoster, herpes simplex).
Nerves problems- Many eye problems related to nerves like guillain, diabetes, multiple sclerosis.
Brain problems- Problems associated with brain that leads to diplopia (double vision) are brain tumours, migraine headaches, strokes, aneurysms.
Muscle problems- The problems which are related to muscle, causing double vision includes- drooping eyelids (ptosis), myasthenia gravis, gravis’ disease.
How it can be Prevented and treated?
As described above, these are various factors which are responsible for double vision. So first of all it is necessary to identify the underlying cause of the diplopia (double vision). When the cause is identified then it is easy to treat the problem accordingly.

13-Blurred vision due to mobile phones and computers

What does this eye symptom mean?
If such eye problems like blurred eyesight, tired and burning eyes are observed, then it may indicate computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye fatigue. Generally the eye fatigue is not of any serious concern but if it persists for long time and you observe some problems like headaches, double vision or significant vision changes, then doctor’s  advice may be required.

It is quite easy to relieve your eyes from eye fatigue by modifying your work habits and the environment. These changes may be like suitably adjusting your computer screen height, tilt and brightness etc. You can relax your eyes by eye relaxing techniques like palming or acupressure after working on computer or mobile phone for long periods. Artificial tears can also prove to be very helpful in lubricating dry and itchy eyes. If eye problems continue then you should visit the eye doctor (ophthalmologist) for eye exam.

14-Disappearing eyebrows

If the outer part of your eyebrows is vanishing, then it’s not the good sign. You may be the victim of thyroid. The body may not be producing enough thyroid hormone. This condition is known as underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). The underactive thyroid shows many other symptoms like frequently having headaches, increase in belly fat and weak nails etc.

If you observe the above mentioned symptoms then it’s the time to be alert. You should enhance the quality of vitamins and minerals in your food to improve the thyroid production. It is advised to get the consultancy of doctor for further treatment.


15-Droopy eyelids (Ptosis)

What does this eye symptom mean?
This eye problem could either be related to one eye (unilateral ptosis) or both eyes (bilateral ptosis). Ptosis can be congenital or acquired. The droopy eyelids can either block the pupil completely or partially. The cause of eyelid drooping (ptosis) may include age factors, incomplete development of muscle responsible to hold the eyelids, LASIK eye surgery, cataract eye surgery, stroke, brain tumor etc.

How it can be Prevented and treated?
Congenital ptosis is not easy to treat but surgical options are available for the cure of acquired ptosis. Special glasses could also be used to hold the eyelids up. It’s not possible to prevent this eye problem. What you can do only is, just to identify the eye symptoms and get the treatment as soon as possible.


16-Red and itchy eyelids

What does this eye symptom mean?
If your eyelids turn red and itchy along with swelling of the eyelids then this eye disease is the  symptom of blepharitis. Other symptom of blepharitis is dandruff like scales on the eyelids and eyelashes.

One of the most effective prevention and also the treatment for the blepharitis is to keep the lid-  margins clean and free from oil, dust and dirt. Minimize the use of eye make-ups. Other treatments are using antibiotics and controlling the cause of allergy after identifying it; if blepharitis is because of some kind of allergy.

17-Eyes turning inwards

What does this eye symptom mean?
The inwards turning of one or both the eyes is called Esotropia. The esotropia can be of various types. Different treatment methodologies are adopted for treating different types of esotropia.
Some common forms of esotropia include-
  • Congenital esotropia
  • Esotropia with amblyopia (lazy eyes)
  • Accommodative esotropia
  • Partially accommodative esotropia
How it can be Prevented and treated?
The common types of treatment methods to cure esotropia are - using eye glasses, prisms or other surgical methods. But even with eye surgery it is difficult to get the perfect normal eyesight.

    2. Eyes which are very important organ of human body. Our body gives us intial warning which we should not avoid in which most commons are :
      Feeling irritation in your eyes.
      Watery or Dry Eyes.
      Unable to focus.
      Pain in neck or heaviness in head.
      These above could be symptoms of weak eyesight.
