3D Printed Glasses for Deformed Corneas!!!

In corneal diseases like keratoconus having deformed corneas, it is hard to get good vision with the help of normal eyeglasses. So it is required to use contact lenses to see the things clearly.

But now 3D printed customized glasses can solve this problem. These 3D Printed glasses can fit to the corneas of different shapes as they can be designed to have free-form surfaces with the help of 3D printing Technology.
3D printed customized eyeglasses can prove to be a boon for the sufferers of keratoconus.

Keratoconus is a corneal disease where the cornea becomes thin and weak and starts to bulge. Because of this, the sufferer cannot see clearly with the help of normal eyeglasses. So the patient needs customized contact lenses that can fit on the irregular corneal surface and can provide a smooth corneal surface to get clear vision.

But now with the help of 3D printing Technology eyeglasses can be manufactured that can fit accurately on the irregular corneal surface of the keratoconus patient.
Doctor song Hongxin at the Beijing Tongren Hospital is working on it. According to Doctor song, he got the inspiration from NASA's adaptive optical system.
Let's hope for the arrival of 3D printed glasses soon.

    1. Glasses don't touch the cornea, so I'm not understanding what part is 3D printed that will help keratoconus and corneas?

    2. Do you mean lenses or glasses? Also anything with spectacle lenses don’t move when the eye moves… so even if the perfect freeform digital lens was created using corneal topography and wavefront aberrometey, then it would only work in one position of gaze.
